Complex Conjugation

Introduction

For any complex number z = a + bi, the complex conjugate of the number is defined as Z* = a - bi

Together z and z* are called a complex conjugate pair

Examples

For any complex number z, the product of z and z* is a real number.

You can use this property to divide two complex numbers

To do this, you multiply both the numerator and the denominator by the complex conjugate of the denominator and then simplify the result

  • The method used to divide complex numbers is similar to the method used to rationalise a denominator when simplifying surds
